YUGC Meeting - 24th July 2008
A successful and enjoyable day was had by all who played in the recent YUGC County Members Summer Meeting at Horsforth on 24 July 2008. A fly-by from a biplane and a tornado jet gave a brief but enjoyable distraction for those on the course in the afternoon. Many thanks to junior member Barnaby Gill for acting as starter and then filling in when one couple failed to turn up.
Rabbit President’s Day – 19 July 2008
Horsforth Golf Clubs President Mike Haley hosted his Rabbits President’s Day on Saturday. The strong wind and blustery showers caused problems for the 173 entrants and with only a few exceptions scores were below par.
The overall winner of the Rabbits President’s Trophy (the winner must have a handicap of 16+) was Paul Ogilvie with a score of 40. Paul also won nearest the pin on the 3rd green.
Mike and his family gave a convivial welcome to all at the Halfway House which was warmly received due to the playing conditions. All winners were present for the prize giving where they received crystal glasses and appropriate bottle to complement the glassware.

Also raised on the day £236 towards Air Ambulance, so in addition to £89.70 from 50p going into ditch on 18th over past 6 months, makes a total so far of £325.70 – quite an achievement from the Ladies.
What a washout!!!
The Senior Men’s Open Day arranged for Monday at Horsforth had to be postponed due to a sudden heavy shower rain flooding the greens in the middle of the day. It has been hastily re-arranged for Monday 28th July and times are available at £25 per couple. Please contact Lesley or Liz on 01132586819 for times and further details.
HORSFORTH CHARITY AM-AM DOES IT AGAIN!
The best day of year so far saw 200 players in teams of 4 take part in the 17th Annual Charity AM-AM at Horsforth Golf Club on Friday 4th July. The proceeds this year are to go to the New Bexley Wing at St James Hospital (previous competitions have raised funds for Cookridge Hospital). The cheque presented to Mr David Bottomley, on the day was made up from entry fees, tombola, raffles and an auction, increased the total over the 17 years to more than £175000 raised by the Club. A part from the good weather and great golf the day was also a celebration for Andy Purdy who travelled from Cambridge to play, he scored a hole in one on the 11th and instead of buying drinks for all he donated £100 to the kitty. The winners were “The Outcasts”, (T Hirst, D Vine, S Vine & J Person), with a fantastic score of 91 points each took home a 26” flat screen TV, they were closely followed by “Butler & Hargreaves” and “Driving Force” both with 90 points. Nearest the pin on the 3rd was won by Mr K Ackroyd from “Harry Gott’s Team”.
The competition was originally the brainchild of Danny Kitching and with the assistance of members and prizes donated by his company’s suppliers and others he has managed to keep the momentum going for 17 years with the majority of the teams coming back year on year and playing in all weathers.
This year, as before, the teams ate from an excellent buffet after their game and enjoyed relaxing well into the night with tunes from the Bootleg Sixties.
Friday 27th June - Captain's Cup Playoff
Mick Thorpe wins the Captain's Cup with a score of 71, Junior Captain Jack Ryan fought hard and came in with 76. The Captain acted as referee.

Horsforth Gardener takes a Gold!!
The Gardener at Horsforth Golf Club, Billy Hewitt, was award the top honour of a Gold Award in the Leeds in Bloom Spring Competition under the Best Small Offices/Business Premises City Wide section. The competition is run through the Leeds Floral Initiative of Leeds City Council and the award ceremony was on Monday 23rd June 2008.
Over the past few years Billy has won bronze and silver wards but this is the first Gold he has achieved. The Golf Club are really pleased for him as his work on the gardens around the Clubhouse has become a talking point for members and guests. Billy grows most of the plants himself and even visits on his days off to ensure all the hanging baskets and troughs are kept watered.
